Abstract

Copy of John Clare's The Village minstrel, and Other Poems (1821) with autograph manuscript 'Sonnet to T. Inskip, Shefford' dated 16 Jul 1847 inscribed on front endleaf.

Biographical / Historical

John Clare (1793-1864) was an English poet, farm labourer and naturalist. For further details see the Dictionary of National Biography.

Custodial History

The first owner of this volume was Thomas Inskip (1780-1849), a watch and clock maker from Shefford in Bedfordshire. It was then passed to Isabella Inskip 'now Isabella Collins, Shefford', presumably Thomas's daughter Isabella (1825-1879). The volume then passed into the Gosse family (it has the booklabel of Irene Gosse (1898-1965), the second wife of Dr Philip Gosse, the son of Sir Edmund Gosse).

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Purchased by the Bodleian Library with the support of the Rose Fund from George Bayntun, 2025.
