Abstract
Archive of Edith Bradley, 1872-1967, 2010.
Biographical / Historical
Edith Bradley (c 1859-1943) was a campaigner for women. She was the first Warden of the Women's College for Agriculture and Horticulture at Studley Castle founded by Daisy, Countess of Warwick. A contributor and later editor of the journal Woman's Agricultural Times, she also authored -- with others -- The Lighter Branches of Agriculture (1903) and The Book of Fruit Bottling (1907), the latter with a forward by the William Wilks, Secretary of the Royal Horticultural Society. She was on the advising committee for the Victorian Era Exhibition that was on display in Earl's Court in 1897.
Bradley advocated women's war effort, especially in the area of agriculture. She was a member of the West Kent Women's Agricultural Committee, later becoming active in the Women's National Land Service Training Corps and acting secretary to the joint committee of the Agriculture War Service for Women in West Kent and other counties. Between the wars she was involved in the Conservative and Unionist movement, but remained a keen agriculturalist based in Horsham, Sussex.
Further details of Edith Bradley's work can be found in a blog entitled 'A Novel Club for Country Loving Girls' written by David Marsh and posted in 2018 in The Garden History Blog.
