During the Second World War, C.S. Lewis gave 25 fifteen-minute radio talks on the BBC Home Service about Christianity, with the first episode broadcast on 6 August 1941. Originally titled 'Right and Wrong: A Clue to the Meaning of the Universe', the talks stretched into four series which were published as: Broadcast Talks (1942), covering the first two sets of broadcasts 'Right and Wrong' and 'What Christians Believe'; Christian Behaviour (1943); and Beyond Personality (1944). All the talks were later published together as Mere Christianity (1952).

This transcript, consisting of 26 annotated typescript and two pages of handwritten notes [the latter more or less printed as the Preface in the published version], is from 'What Christians Believe', the second series which was broadcast in five parts between 11 January and 15 February 1942. Lewis corresponded with Mary Clements during the late 1930s/early years of the Second World War and it is likely he sent her this transcript for commenting on (the red pencil markings are likely to have been made by her). She kept the transcript and later wrapped it in red paper from a local grocery store, Cubitt & Son, Ltd, North Walsham.
